We are back in Germany, just in time for Christmas. After seeing all the preparations in Western Europe, I was excited to show Doug what Christmas at my mom’s place looks like. I will say right here this is not representative of how all Germans do it. This is unique to my mom, and within my family, how it gets celebrated and how much decoration is up varied drastically.

My mom is a Christmas fanatic and takes one week off work to prepare the house – inside and outside. For most people, the decoration is a little much, and I like to describe it as Christmas on steroids. However, it does make it special and unique for Christmas and Advent time. I grew up like this and loved it.

The one thing that belongs to me to the Christmas Season that I did not have the last seven years was going to the Christmas markets! I LOVE Christmas markets; admittedly, it is mainly about the food, but the atmosphere is also beautiful and gets you in the mood. I went to three markets this time, two in Regensburg and one in Nürnberg.

Germany celebrates Christmas on the 24th and considers the 25th and 26th as the first and second Christmas holidays. So, on the 24th my family will prepare a nice meal and gifts will be placed under the tree. The tradition for my mom is that we make fondue on the 24th with our favorite sauce in the world – the Mango Chutney Sauce. It is hard to explain what fondue is, so I just let the pictures speak later on. The pots in the middle of the table are filled with fat to fry the meat. You put the raw piece of meat on a stick and then place the stick into the pot. Alternatively, one can put broth or cheese in it as well for vegetable or cheese fondue. We always do it with meat. This meal is supposed to be a slow meal and take some time which means before we start to eat, this is what happens:

We gather around the tree and pick 2-3 Christmas songs and sing them. Growing up, I usually would accompany everyone on the recorder, the piano, or the violin. This year we skipped this step due to the people attending and the unwillingness/inability to sing the songs. After that, we all take a glass of champagne and wish each other Merry Christmas. Once this is done, we get to unpack our gifts and thank each other for them.

 After all this, we finally get to EAT! The meal itself can last from 2 hours to whatever time. It depends on how much you can eat and how fast you do it. The end always comes unexpectedly – one minute, you feel fine, and the next, you realize how full your stomach is.

My mom prepared a wonderful Christmas this year and made an enormous effort to make it special! It felt so nice to be home for Christmas again after seven years!

Wir sind zurück in Deutschland, gerade richtig für Weihnachten. Nachdem wir die ganzen Vorbereitungen in West-Europa gesehen haben, war ich aufgeregt Doug zu zeigen, wie Weihnachten bei meiner Mama zu Hause aussieht. Ich werde gleich jetzt sagen, dass Weihnachten in Deutschland sehr unterschiedlich gefeiert wird und dies nicht repräsentativ für alle Deutschen ist. Das ist sehr einzigartig in Bezug zu meiner Mama und innerhalb meiner eigenen Familie unterscheidet sich die Art und Weise wie Weihnachten gefeiert und dekoriert wird drastisch.

Meine Mama ist ein „Weihnachtsfanatiker“ und nimmt sich eine Woche frei, um das Haus auf die Weihnachtszeit vorzubereiten – drinnen und draußen. Für viele ist die Dekoration ein bisschen viel und ich beschreibe es üblicherweise als Weihnachten auf Steroiden. Allerdings macht es die Adventszeit und Weihnachten auch sehr besonders und einzigartig. Ich bin so aufgewachsen und hab es geliebt. 

Die eine Sache, die für mich zu der Weihnachtszeit gehört und was ich seit sieben Jahren nicht mehr hatte, ist auf den Weihnachtsmarkt zu gehen! Ich LIEBE Weihnachtsmärkte, zugegebener Massen ist der Grund hauptsächlich das Essen, was man dort kaufen kann, aber die Atmosphäre ist auch wunderschön und versetzt einen in die richtige Stimmung. Ich bin zu drei Weihnachtsmärkten gegangen, zwei in Regensburg und einen in Nürnberg.

Nun, Deutschland feiert Weihnachten am 24. Dezember und nennt den 25. und 26. Dezember erster und zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag. Daher bereitet meine Familie am 24. ein sehr aufwändiges Abendessen vor und Geschenke werden unter den Baum gelegt. Die Tradition mit meiner Mama ist, dass wir immer Fondue am 24. machen, mit unserer absoluten Lieblingssoße – Mango Chutney Soße. Es ist etwas schwer zu beschreiben, was Fondue ist, also werde ich einfach die Bilder später für sich sprechen lassen. Die Töpfe, die ihr in der Tischmitte sehen werdet, sind mit Fett gefüllt, um das Fleisch zu braten. Man steckt das rohe Fleisch an eine lange Gabel und dann versenkt es in dem Topf. Alternativ kann man statt Fett auch Gemüsebrühe oder Käse benutzen für Gemüse oder Käsefondue. Wir machen unseres immer mit Fleisch. Dieses Essen ist absichtlich ein langsames Essen und soll ein bisschen dauern, was heißt, die folgenden Dinge passieren, bevor das Essen beginnt:

Wir versammeln uns um den Weihnachtsbaum und wählen 2-3 Weihnachtslieder und singen diese. Nun, früher habe ich normalerweise die Gruppe immer entweder auf der Blockflöte, dem Klavier oder der Geige begleitet. Dieses Jahr haben wir diese Tradition übersprungen, da die anwesenden Gäste entweder nicht singen wollten oder konnten. Danach nimmt sich jeder ein Glas Sekt, stößt an und wünscht sich frohe Weihnachten. Anschließend dürfen wir unsere Geschenke auspacken und uns dafür danken.

Wenn all das erledigt ist, dürfen wir endlich ESSEN! Das Abendessen selbst kann von zwei Stunden bis zu einer unbestimmten Zeit andauern. Das Ende kommt oft unerwartet – im einen Moment fühlt man sich noch gut und im nächsten realisiert man, wie voll der Magen ist.

Meine Mama hat ein wunderschönes Weihnachten vorbereitet und sich eine riesige Mühe gemacht es besonders zu machen! Es war so schön nach sieben Jahren endlich mal wieder für Weihnachten zu Hause zu sein!

Estamos de vuelta en Alemania, justo a tiempo para Navidad. Después de ver todos los preparativos en Europa occidental, estaba emocionado de mostrarle a Doug cómo es la Navidad en casa de mi madre. Diré aquí mismo que esto no es representativo de cómo lo hacen todos los alemanes. Esto es exclusivo de mi madre, y dentro de mi familia, la forma en que se celebra y la cantidad de decoración varía drásticamente.

Mi mamá es una fanática de la Navidad y se toma una semana libre para preparar la casa, por dentro y por fuera. Para la mayoría de la gente, la decoración es un poco exagerada, y me gusta describirla como Navidad con esteroides. Sin embargo, lo hace especial y único para Navidad y Adviento. Crecí así y me encantó.

¡Lo único que pertenece a la temporada navideña que no tuve en los últimos siete años fue ir a los mercados navideños! AMO los mercados navideños; Es cierto que se trata principalmente de la comida, pero el ambiente también es hermoso y te pone de buen humor. Esta vez fui a tres mercados, dos en Regensburg y uno en Nürnberg.

Alemania celebra la Navidad el día 24 y considera los días 25 y 26 como la primera y segunda fiesta navideña. Entonces, el 24, mi familia preparará una buena comida y se colocarán regalos debajo del árbol. Después de todo esto, ¡por fin llegamos a COMER! La comida en sí puede durar desde 2 horas hasta cualquier hora. Depende de cuánto puedas comer y qué tan rápido lo hagas. El final siempre llega de forma inesperada: un minuto te sientes bien y al siguiente te das cuenta de lo lleno que tienes el estómago.

¡Mi mamá preparó una Navidad maravillosa este año e hizo un esfuerzo enorme para que fuera especial! ¡Se sintió tan bien estar en casa para Navidad nuevamente después de siete años!
