How we celebrate New Year’s/ Wie wir Silvester feiern/ Cómo celebramos el Año Nuevo

Christmas is over! We have a week to recuperate before the next celebration is due – New Year's! Again, this might differ from family to family, how things are celebrated and what activities are done. This post will be about what we did.

Growing up, we traditionally would make Raclette in the evening on the 31st. I will rely again on the pictures to clarify, but here is also a short description: Raclette originally was Swiss and involved only cheese and potatoes. One has a device that heats the cut side of a big chunk of cheese and then scrapes it down onto the potatoes. There is an evolved version where we have a mini oven in the middle of the table where you can push pans below to melt the cheese and fry things on the top. The ingredients and phantasy of what you can cook on this mini stove have no boundaries. 😊 This is also a slow meal, just like the fondue, and is supposed to take several hours to bridge the time to midnight. We had friends and family invited over to my mom’s house, and also added a pot for fondue to use up all the leftovers. We had a lot of food prepared; of course, we did not eat it all!

It is also a tradition in our family to watch a black-and-white skit called “Dinner for One.” It takes about 15-20 minutes and is mainly physical humor. It is a tradition I have honored ever since I can remember, no matter where I am in the world. So, this evening was no exception; of course, we all gathered on the couch and watched this short skit.

Shortly before midnight, we all get dressed, pour champagne into the glasses, and distribute them. Someone will start the countdown, and we all clink glasses at midnight and wish each other a Happy New Year. Then the fireworks begin! This year we were finally allowed to set them off again, it was banned for the last two years, and I have not been shooting fireworks since I came to the US (which was nine years ago). So, I was excited, and we had plenty to send into the sky!

Once the fireworks were done, we went back inside (after the clean-up, of course), and then it was time to see what the New Year would hold for us. We did something called “wax-pouring,” if you want to translate it literally. One has a piece of candle wax and melts it over a candle, then pours the liquid into a big bowl of water (mixed with salt and dish soap). You then take the hardened wax out and project the form onto the wall with a flashlight. The form will be interpreted and then looked up on an index to see what the form stands for and what your fortune will be for this year. My form was a dinosaur which meant, “You have high ambitions this year but go for it; you will succeed.” Well, we will see how this plays out. Everyone had their turn, and we all got to participate in each other’s fortune.

Weihnachten ist vorbei! Wir haben eine Woche, um uns zu erholen, bevor die nächste Feierlichkeit ansteht – Silvester! Ich wiederhole, dass, wie dieser Anlass gefeiert wird und was für Traditionen verfolgt werden, ganz von der Familie abhängt. Dieser Post wird beschreiben, was wir gemacht haben.

In meiner Kindheit & Jugend war es Tradition, dass wir am Abend des 31. Dezember Raclette gemacht haben. Ich werde mich wieder auf die Bilder verlassen, um mehr Klarheit zu verschaffen, was das genau ist, aber hier ist eine schnelle Beschreibung: Raclette kommt eigentlich aus der Schweiz und involviert nur Kartoffeln und Käse. Man hat ein Gerät, das die aufgeschnittene Seite eines dicken Stücks Käse schmilzt und dann schabt man den geschmolzenen Käse auf die Kartoffeln drauf. Es gibt eine weiterentwickelte Version davon, in der man einen Mini-Ofen auf dem Tisch hat und unten drin kann man Pfannen reinschieben und den Käse schmelzen und obendrauf kann man braten.

Den Zutaten und der Fantasie in Bezug auf was man alles auf diesem Mini-Ofen kochen kann, sind keine Grenzen gesetzt. 😊 Dies ist, wie das Fondue, ein langsames Essen, was mehrere Stunden dauern kann, um die Zeit bis Mitternacht zu überbrücken. Meine Mama hat Freund und Familie eingeladen und wir haben auch nochmal Fondue gemacht, um die Reste zu verwerten. Wir hatten so viel Essen vorbereitet und natürlich haben wir nicht alles gegessen!

Es ist auch Tradition in unserer Familie einen schwarz und weiß Sketch anzusehen, der sich „Dinner for One“ nennt. Der Sketch dauert so 15-20 Minuten und hat hauptsächlich physischen Humor. Das ist eine Tradition, die ich verfolge, seitdem ich mich erinnern kann, egal wo ich gerade in der Welt bin. Dieser Abend war keine Ausnahme; natürlich haben wir uns alle auf der Couch versammelt und haben den kurzen Sketch angesehen.

Kurz bevor Mitternacht ziehen wir uns alle warm an, gießen den Sekt in die Gläser und verteilen sie. Irgendjemand wird dann den Countdown starten und genau um Mitternacht wird angestoßen und wir wünschen uns alle ein frohes neues Jahr. Dann beginnt das Feuerwerk! Dieses Jahr waren wir endlich wieder erlaubt Raketen zu schießen, die letzten zwei Jahre war es verboten und ich habe keine Raketen mehr geschossen, seitdem ich in die USA gegangen bin (was jetzt neun Jahre her erst). Daher war ich aufgeregt und wir haben einige Raketen in den Himmel geschossen!

Als das Feuerwerk vorbei war, sind wir wieder ins Haus (nachdem wir die Straße sauber gemacht haben, natürlich) und dann war es an der Zeit zu sehen, was das Neue Jahr für uns zu bieten hatte. Wir haben dann Wachsgießen gemacht. Das geht folgendermaßen: Man hat ein Stück Wachs und schmilzt es über einer Kerze. Das flüssige Wachs wird dann in eine große Schüssel Wasser (gemischt mit Salz und Spülmittel) gegossen. Man nimmt nun das hart gewordene Wachs aus der Schüssel und projiziert die Form mit einer Taschenlampe an die Wand. Die Form wird dann interpretiert und man schaut in einem Inde nach, was die Form bedeutet und was die Zukunft für dieses Jahr bringt. Meine Form war ein Dinosaurier, was bedeutet so viel wie "Sie haben hohe Ambitionen dieses Jahr, verfolgen Sie die; Sie werden erfolgreich sein.“ Wir werden sehen, was sich ergibt dieses Jahr. Jeder kommt an die Reihe und wir alle arbeiteten zusammen, um jedermann’s Vorhersage zu interpretieren.

¡Se acabó la Navidad! Tenemos una semana para recuperarnos antes de la próxima celebración: ¡Año Nuevo! Nuevamente, esto puede diferir de una familia a otra, cómo se celebran las cosas y qué actividades se realizan. Esta publicación será sobre lo que hicimos.

Mientras crecíamos, tradicionalmente hacíamos Raclette en la noche del 31. Me basaré nuevamente en las imágenes para aclarar, pero aquí también hay una breve descripción: originalmente, la raclette era suiza y solo incluía queso y papas. Uno tiene un dispositivo que calienta el lado cortado de un gran trozo de queso y luego lo raspa sobre las papas. Hay una versión evolucionada en la que tenemos un mini horno en el medio de la mesa donde puedes empujar sartenes hacia abajo para derretir el queso y freír cosas en la parte superior. Los ingredientes y la fantasía de lo que puedes cocinar en esta mini estufa no tienen límites. 😊 Esta también es una comida lenta, como la fondue, y se supone que toma varias horas para llegar a la medianoche. Invitamos a amigos y familiares a la casa de mi madre y también agregamos una olla para fondue para usar todas las sobras. ¡Teníamos mucha comida preparada y por supuesto no nos la comimos toda!

También es una tradición en nuestra familia ver una obra de teatro en blanco y negro llamada “Cena para uno”. Dura entre 15 y 20 minutos y es principalmente humor físico. Es una tradición que he honrado desde que tengo uso de razón, sin importar en qué parte del mundo me encuentre. Entonces, esta noche no fue la excepción; por supuesto, todos nos reunimos en el sofá y vimos este breve sketch.

Poco antes de la medianoche, todos nos vestimos, vertemos champán en las copas y las distribuimos. Alguien comenzará la cuenta regresiva, y todos chocaremos las copas a medianoche y nos desearemos un Feliz Año Nuevo. ¡Entonces comienzan los fuegos artificiales! Este año finalmente se nos permitió encenderlos nuevamente, estuvo prohibido durante los últimos dos años y no he disparado fuegos artificiales desde que llegué a los EE. UU. (que fue hace nueve años). Entonces, estaba emocionado, ¡y teníamos mucho para enviar al cielo!

Una vez que terminaron los fuegos artificiales, volvimos adentro (después de la limpieza, por supuesto), y luego llegó el momento de ver qué nos depararía el Año Nuevo. Hicimos algo llamado "vertido de cera", si quieres traducirlo literalmente. Uno tiene un trozo de cera de vela y la derrite sobre una vela, luego vierte el líquido en un recipiente grande con agua (mezclada con sal y jabón para platos). Luego saca la cera endurecida y proyecta la forma en la pared con una linterna. El formulario se interpretará y luego se buscará en un índice para ver qué representa el formulario y cuál será su fortuna para este año. Mi forma era un dinosaurio que significaba: “Tienes grandes ambiciones este año, pero hazlo; tu tendrás exito." Bueno, veremos cómo se desarrolla esto. Todos tuvieron su turno y todos pudimos participar en la fortuna de los demás.
