A peacock, Eazy -E and a loaded question at the post office!
My apologies for the delay – we had internet issues this
past week.
The past three weeks we spent in the South of England in a
charming little town called Rodmell. It is truly a small town that has one pub
in which we were able to eat once. This was not due to a lack of trying but due
to us being the outsiders in the village, obviously not knowing when the pub was
open and when not. We appeared always at the pub when it was closed, and there
were no hours posted, so either you knew when to come or you simply did not
belong to the club. 😊
In Rodmell, we stayed in a food forest, which is more or less
exactly what you would expect. It was a larger Estate with several buildings on
it and a big garden attached with mainly eatable plants in it. You truly could
take a stroll (or a bimble, as one employee would call it 😊) and find everything from berries to spinach, kale, tomatoes, pears, rhubarb,
silver berries, herbs, and more. It was amazing! We also had chickens, a rooster
(which reliably woke us up every day between 6:30am – 7:15am), cats, sheep, and
even a peacock!
Monday through Friday, we would do volunteer tasks for about
6 hours, and for the rest of the time, we could do whatever we wanted, explore
the area or just relax. Once a week, we would work with the gardener, who would
teach us many things about the garden and give us some ideas about what we could work
on for the rest of the week. We burnt things, moved debris, weeded, weed
whacked, harvested, food processed, cleaned, watered, and more. We learned about
the local plant world and were amazed about the vegetables and fruits we could
still harvest (zucchini, berries, tomatoes, spinach, for example)! We got to
know the chickens very well, which produced about two tiny eggs per day. One
time we used 9 eggs for a scrambled egg breakfast! Would sound crazy usually, but
the eggs were really small!
Another ritual of mine was to help the peacock back into the
fenced area (that happened on a few mornings). The peacock’s wings were not
clipped, so he left in the evening the fenced-in area to sleep in a nearby tree.
However, it seemed to forget how to get back into the fenced-in area every
morning since it would scream and run around the area without being able to
retrieve its steps from the night before. At first, it would not trust me, but
after a while, I could walk with it to the door, open the door, and it would just
walk in.
We stayed in a yurt with a wood-burning stove which we used
quite a bit since the nights became quickly fairly cold. The yurt itself had a
lot of big spiders and bugs crawling around. The first night we went to lay
down in the beds and stared at the top of the yurt only to find out that more than 10 big spiders were hanging out there, and I am talking about spiders where
you can see the hair on their legs… Needless to say that Doug was hunting a lot
of spiders that night. Other than that, we had access to a shared kitchen with
provided groceries, a shower, and a toilet. We also could have used the compost
toilet…yes, I say could have because we tried it and decided not to do it. The
concept itself is great and makes sense, BUT like I said earlier, it became
really cool, and I cannot sit peacefully on the toilet when the wind is blowing
around my exposed butt, and I am supposed to pee in a funnel which is quite
tricky for us ladies, to say the least – I tried. Oh well, we all need to
choose our challenges sometimes, and this time I decided to walk away from it. 😊
For the rest of the three weeks, we explored the surrounding
villages/ cities: Brighton, Lewes, Southease, Newhaven, and Seaford.
A little side note to the logistics of our location: we were
truly remote there but also not really. We could walk 40 minutes to Southease
and take the train there to the next towns over, which was doable and cost
around 3 pounds; was just a time commitment. We could also take a taxi which
was between 11-15 pounds, from Lewes to Rodmell, depending on the day. Uber did
not work there. Because of us needing to walk a lot, my fit bit averaged easily
over 6 miles (9 kilometers) every day. Sometimes we walked up to 12 km per day.
I was concerned I would not get enough exercise when we are traveling, which is
clearly not an issue!
One time we took a taxi from Lewes back to Rodmell and
started talking with our taxi driver. We asked him for recommendations
regarding things to see and do around here, and he paused and eventually said, “Around here, there is nothing to see. Lewes, you can explore within 5 minutes, and then you are done. There is nothing here.” When we asked him for food
recommendations, he recommended an Indian Restaurant only (he was Indian).
Granted, we actually did go to that restaurant twice, and the food was fantastic
indeed! In terms of sights – worst tour guide ever! :D
We went to Brighton for a concert by Superorganism, which was
a lot of fun! Doug had discovered this band a while ago and found out they would play in Brighton just when we were there; of course, we had to go.
Brighton is directly at the English Channel and had great ocean views, a lively vibe with many young people, and an active nightlife.
We also went to Seaford, which has the famous chalk cliffs
and the ocean. It was a beautiful day for us to go there even though the wind
was very strong and cold. We walked to the neighboring town Newhaven since
there was the memorial bench for Eazy-E (a popular US rapper in the 80ties and
90ties). It is a joke to a certain extent because Eazy-E has no connection to
Newhaven; this was just a fan pushing for this to happen. The placement of the
bench is in a small park on an “island,” an industrial area that is neither nice nor frequented by people. But hey, we still saw it!
We went to Lewes a few times to run errands, for a couple
beers, and for food. Lewes also has a castle and is just a small charming town.
We did enjoy exploring the pub scene there. One time I was standing in line at
the post office, and all of a sudden, this older gentleman struck up a conversation
with me. He was quite sarcastic and funny. I actually confused him a little
(which was not the first time) since he could clearly hear that my English was
American, and yet there was another accent present, so the obligatory question arose, “Where are you from?”. Well, it always takes me a moment to answer this
question because here they obviously notice that my English is American English, but if I only tell them I am German and do not explain anything further, this
triggers more questions, and I usually don’t want to present my whole biography.
I have finally figured out a short answer that will satisfy all the asked and
implicated questions: I am a German that immigrated to the United States.
When he heard that, his next question was: “What do you think
about Brexit?” What do you say in a moment like this? How honest can you be? I
tried to buy some time and answered, “You know that you are asking a loaded
question here right now?!” He agreed smilingly and yet wanted me to answer. Well,
I decided to be honest and direct, as I usually am, and said short and sweet, “I
think it’s dumb.” He smiled and said, “Ok, I can respect that…” and then he went on to explain to me all the financial and tax benefits and why he thought Brexit
was good. He obviously had thought more about this topic than me; however, who
is prepared for a full-on discussion like that at the post office?! :D It was an interesting and funny conversation
nevertheless, no hard feelings about that - it was just a little unexpected.
Our plan was to leave Rodmell on Sunday, October 2nd,
but we learned that the trains would resume their strikes that weekend, and our
romantic idea of crossing whole of England with the train evaporated. We settled
for taking the bus and leaving on Friday already. We left for London in the
morning and met up with a friend for a final send-off, and then took the bus at
9pm from London to Glasgow. The bus ride was fine and very entertaining. Even
though we did not see much from the landscape, there was loads of entertainment on
the bus: be it seat neighbors arguing in a different language or the bus driver
rocking out to the song “I’m a barbie girl” at 4 am in the morning. We
transferred in Glasgow to another bus and arrived in Scotland, Aberdeen at
10:30am in the morning. Now we will spend a week in beautiful Scotland!
Ort Rodmell, in Süd-England verbracht.
Städte erkundschaftet: Brighton, Lewes, Southease, Newhaven, Seaford.
man alles gesehen.
gefahren was sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat!
Hemmungen zu “I’m a barbie girl” gerockt hat.
Quemamos cosas,
movimos escombros, quitamos malezas, cortamos malezas, cosechamos, procesamos
No hace falta
Uber no funcionó allí. Debido a
¡Ahora
pasaremos una semana en la hermosa Escocia!
